Hi! I’m Jordan, a UX Research Student in the School of Information and a Planet Blue Ambassador Program Assistant. I’m excited to take you along for a day in my life to show you some sustainable features of my day while working from home.
These are three topics that I touch on in the video that I wanted to make sure you had the resources and links for.
Safe Skin Care
The Environmental Working Group’s safe beauty products database is an easy to navigate site that lets you search for products including sunscreen, mascara, foundation, lip balm, etc. and learn about the chemical ingredients. This can help empower you to protect yourself from potentially toxic chemicals and make safer and more sustainable choices.
Sustainable Food
Eating locally sourced and seasonal foods is a simple way to eat more sustainably. Check out the Michigan State Extension seasonal food pocket guide to find out what produce is in season during each month of the year in Michigan. You can also visit the UMSFP guide to eating sustainably off-campus.
To find seasonal local produce near you, search for a local farmers market or if you are in Ann Arbor, check out these resources:
Composting
The EPA estimates that roughly 25% of the garbage in the U.S. is made up of yard trimmings and food scraps. Ann Arbor has a compost program which will haul away your composted organic material for free.
This is a really nice video – thanks for putting it out there. (love your apartment decor by the way). I didn’t really know about food scraps producing methane gas in the landfill. I will be more mindful of that in the future.
